I am happy to learn that the students of IISER Mohali are bringing out the first issue of our in house magazine this month.
Although the Foundation stone for the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Mohali was unveiled by the Honorable Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh on September 27, 2006, the Institute started functioning in the transit campus in the MGSIPA complex only in the year 2007-08. The undersigned took charge as its founder Director on June 17, 2007. The Registrar Sh. J. P. Singh took charge on July 1, 2007. The first batch of students were admitted in July
2007 and classes started on August 16, 2007 at 9 am. Thanks to the support from Government of Punjab, the academic building became functional in August 2007. It was formally inaugurated by Sh. R. I. Singh, IAS, Chief Secretary, Government of Punjab on November 13, 2007. The laboratories had become functional by then. The computer center was inaugurated by Dr. T. Ramaswami, Department of Science and Technology on September 3, 2007. Prof. S. C. Laroiya, Director, NITTTR was kind enough to provide hostel accommodation for our students in their hostel.
A number of distinguished scientists came forward to become the faculty at IISER Mohali. It has been a teamwork by faculty, staff and the students that has made IISER Mohali what it is today. In the year and a half that has gone by many visitors have come by and many seminars have taken place. The best performing students in each semester were encouraged with the C.N.R Rao Foundation Prize. I take this opportunity to congratulate Sameep Chandel and Amol Deshmukh for receiving the first
two CNR Rao Foundation Prizes.
The Institute took off in its second year, with another 55 students joining the Masters Programme and 7 students joining the Ph. D Programme in 2008-09. That number is still increasing as I write this. Several laboratories have been created and several equipments are already functioning. The Institute has come a long way in setting up a fully functional academic environment with spirited faculty, staff and students. The magazine that is in your hands is now a testimony to the efforts of the students in bringing IISER Mohali to its present stage. I wish the entire team Godspeed in its efforts to place IISER Mohali as the No.1 institute in the country in the near future.
With best wishes,
Prof. N. Sathyamurthy
